Strengthening safeguarding in Spain and Portugal

Cultural transformation is helping to protect two million children.

In Spain and Portugal there's still no legal requirement for organisations to provide safe environments for these people, and no critical mass focusing on the urgent need for transformation. Many NGOs are still unaware of the risk of child abuse and unsure how to put in place measures to protect children better. As a result, Porticus has taken up a role to develop a comprehensive safeguarding culture, concentrating our work on the Catholic and not-for-profit sector.

We started by running intensive training for both Porticus and partner staff through mentoring and workshops delivered by both local and international safeguarding experts. Our aim is to strengthen and expand safeguarding through an effective child-centred programme in Iberia to ensure protection for the two million children supported by Catholic organisations in Spain and Portugal.
