Embracing the presence and contributions of “LatinX” in the Catholic Church in the USA

Porticus “Youth and Young Adult Ministry Programme” seeks to improve access to Catholic faith formation opportunities that are relevant for today’s youth and young adults, particularly for those of Hispanic descent (LatinX).

There are 78 million Catholics in the United States. Even if there is evidence of increased disaffiliation from the Church among some parts of society, there continues to be a growth trend, particularly with Hispanics who account for 43% of the Catholic population. Yet, despite their large numbers, Hispanic people represent only 8% of parish and diocesan employees nationwide and are often considered a minority by mainstream Catholic ministerial and organisational structures. A lack of culturally sensitive, theological education, as well as insufficient formation for faith leadership, present major obstacles to the full participation of this community in the life of the church.

In response, Porticus has initiated the “Youth and Young Adult Ministry Programme.” It is shaped and implemented by a network of 12 partner organisations. Partners range from universities and national networks serving Hispanic youth, to dioceses and grass-roots youth organisations across the United States. Together, our programme partners work to support a laity (people who are not part of the clergy) that is well equipped to take on leadership roles within their own faith communities and bring about positive change in society and the Church.

One example of the programme’s activities is the most recent “Encuentro,” a national summit promoting reflection and analysis to discern how to best respond to the evangelisation needs of Hispanic Catholics.

“For over twelve years, Porticus has been helping to build some of the key structures and institutions serving the Hispanic Church. We feel the presence and contributions of Hispanic Catholics in the Church and society are key to ensuring a vibrant, prophetic, and relevant future.”
