Creating safe spaces to learn in Zimbabwe

Strengthened safeguarding and the promotion of the rights of children will ensure students have the opportunity to learn in a safe and nurturing environment within Catholic Education institutions.

The 2013 Constitution of Zimbabwe and International Laws articulate the full rights of a child to live and learn without the threat of physical violence. Even so, over 75% of children aged 13-17 report experiencing physical abuse, with 47% of girls and 58% of boys suffering violent abuse from school staff. Often this is dismissed under the pretext of 'discipline'. Consequently, children in Zimbabwe face serious obstacles to their learning and development.

Our programme seeks to stimulate a shift in mindsets and protection practices, leading to a new culture of safety in the Catholic school system. By raising the value of children both in the Church and broader society, this work will cultivate safe learning environments where mutual respect and dignity are the norm and violence has no place.
